TWILIGHT AT THE MUSEUMS 18th February

Twilight Visits – Museums of Archaeology & Anthropology and Sedgwick

On a lively “Twilight” evening, our group of 9 families (29 people in total) enjoyed special after-hours visits to the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences in Cambridge. Despite minor transport disruptions, the event was a great success and provided an exciting and memorable experience for everyone involved.

Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (MAA)

The evening began at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, where families explored fascinating collections from around the world. The twilight setting created a special atmosphere. Exploring the galleries after hours made the experience feel unique and immersive. Both children and adults were captivated by the stories behind the objects and the insights into past civilizations.

Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences

The group then continued to the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences. Here, families discovered: impressive fossil displays, dinosaur skeletons and prehistoric marine reptiles.

The museum’s displays sparked lively conversations, especially among younger attendees fascinated by fossils and ancient life. The twilight visit added to the excitement, making the exhibits feel even more dramatic and engaging.

The Twilight museum visits were: great fun for all ages ,well attended with strong family participation

We would like to thank the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences fot a fantastic opportunity for families to learn together in a unique after-hours setting. The goody bags were particularly appreciated.

Repair Cafe

Repair Café Community Report

The recent Repair Café gathering was a wonderful reminder of what a community can achieve when people come together with generosity, patience, and shared purpose. The event was not only a practical success but also a warm, social space filled with collaboration, learning, and good spirit.

Visitors arrived with a wide variety of items in need of attention — from small household appliances and clothing to cherished personal belongings. Thanks to the remarkable dedication and skill of our volunteer repairers, many of these items were given a new lease on life. Beyond the repairs themselves, the conversations, advice, and knowledge shared throughout the day reflected the true heart of the Repair Café philosophy: reducing waste while strengthening community connections.

During the afternoon session, the team assessed a total of 45 items, of which 38 were fully repaired and returned to use. Notably, 12 electrical items were successfully repaired, safety-checked, PAT tested, and safely put back into service — a fantastic outcome highlighting both the technical expertise and strong safety awareness of the volunteers.

Beyond the immediate repair successes, the event delivered meaningful environmental benefits. By restoring items rather than discarding them, the Repair Café helped divert waste from landfill, reduce demand for new replacement products, and promote more sustainable consumption habits. Each repaired item represents saved materials, conserved energy, and avoided emissions — demonstrating how small, community-led actions can collectively contribute to a more circular and environmentally responsible economy.

We extend our sincere thanks to the many people and organizations who made this event possible:

To our volunteer repairers – Your expertise, patience, and willingness to troubleshoot everything from the simple to the stubborn are what make the Repair Café work. You didn’t just fix objects; you helped people understand them, learn from them, and feel supported.

To our administrative volunteers – Your organization, coordination, and behind-the-scenes efforts ensured that everything ran smoothly. From welcoming participants to managing logistics, your work created the foundation for a successful and stress-free event.

To our catering team – Thank you for keeping everyone fueled, comfortable, and smiling. The refreshments and welcoming atmosphere you provided helped transform the space into a friendly, social environment rather than just a repair workshop.

We also wish to express our gratitude to our supporters and hosts. Special thanks to the Electrical Safety First for their valued sponsorship and continued support of community initiatives. We are equally grateful to North Cambridge Academy for generously hosting the event and providing such a welcoming and well-suited venue.

Most importantly, thank you to every volunteer who contributed time, energy, and enthusiasm. The Repair Café thrives because of your commitment and community spirit. Your efforts not only extend the life of everyday items but also reinforce values of sustainability, cooperation, and mutual support.

We look forward to future gatherings and to continuing this shared mission together.

Hampton Court

our incredible trip to Hampton Court Palace!

What a day. More than 50 of us, representing 15 families, somehow managed to turn a simple outing into something that genuinely felt special. From the moment we arrived, the energy, laughter, and curiosity of the group made the entire experience unforgettable.

The palace itself was absolutely stunning — the history, the architecture, the gardens — but honestly, the best part was experiencing it together. Watching the kids explore with wide-eyed excitement, seeing everyone swap stories, take photos, and just enjoy being there… it was one of those rare days that leaves you smiling long after it’s over.

Everything just clicked: great company, beautiful surroundings, and a shared sense of adventure. These are exactly the kinds of memories that stick with you.

So grateful to everyone who came along and helped make the day so fun, relaxed, and full of good vibes. Here’s to many more adventures together!
